How Frequently Does Your Bathroom Need To Be Cleaned?

By

Bathrooms are one of the dirtiest rooms in a home, and let’s be honest, cleaning it is never at the top of anyone’s list of hobbies. But, cleaning your bathroom is an essential chore of any household and one that needs to be done often. Specifically, it’s recommended that everyone give their bathrooms a deep cleaning at least once a week. But, there’s a catch.

Showers, tubs, sinks, and toilets all need to be cleaned at different rates within the week, and there’s no way of getting past how manual the labor is. And, when you factor in cleaning mirrors, shower curtains, and bath mats, it can begin to feel like you’re consistently cleaning something in your bathroom.

There is some good news though – there are several bathroom cleaning hacks you can use to make this chore a lot less stressful. Below, we’ve answered the question of how often you should clean your bathroom by breaking down its individual components, along with some other helpful tips, so you can make sure everything is squeaky clean.

Toilet

Toilets are the most taboo thing about a bathroom, which means that it needs to be cleaned the most regularly. If you live alone, you can probably clean it every few days, but if you don’t you will want to clean it much more often. We recommend cleaning the bowl of your toilet lightly every other day and then deep cleaning it once a week to make sure that grime can’t build up. Don’t forget to give the outside, handle, and seat an antibacterial wipe down every day.

Shower and Tub

Showers and tubs are the places you go to get clean, so they will also need a lot of your attention to ensure that their surfaces can stay clean as well. It’s recommended that showers and tubs be cleaned once a week, but there is also something you can do every day to ensure that this dirty job doesn’t require too much elbow grease.

Soap scum and mildew attach to wet surfaces, so showers and tubs are the perfect places for them to thrive. But, if there isn’t any water for them to work with, you won’t have to worry about them. So, after you’ve finished showering or taking a bath, make sure to lightly dry or squeegee your surfaces to prevent soap scum and mildew from building up.

Sink

Our hands are full of germs that we’ve collected during the day, and when we wash them, they are deposited on the knobs and in the bowl. Bathroom sinks should be cleaned every day with an all-purpose or antibacterial cleaner to kill the germs that collect there. And, while you’re at it, clean your mirror too!

Bathroom Rug

Because it gets so much foot traffic from feet that can be either dirty or soaking wet, your bathroom rugs should be washed once per week, or more often if you notice staining.

Shower Curtain

Shower curtains are often made of materials that are durable and prevent immediate staining or mold buildup, but be sure to remove your bathroom shower curtain and give it a thorough cleaning at least once a month.
