But, it can be hard to know which fabrics can tick all of those boxes when the time comes to purchase a coat. Winter coats are meant to last for years, so if you get one that doesn’t satisfy your needs, you might have to shell out even more money to buy a better coat next season. So, what is the warmest material for winter coats?

We wanted to help you know how to buy a winter coat, so below are three durable, warm fabrics to look for when you’re out shopping this season. Be sure to review our list of the best top winter-weather coat materials below. Happy shopping!

Best Fabrics or Materials for Winter Coats

Wool

When people think of warm winter coats, one of the first fabrics that go into their minds is wool. Wool is a gorgeous, and incredibly warm fabric that is perfect for the winter months. Wool is lightweight, yet strong, which makes it durable and long-lasting. Wool is a natural fabric, typically gotten from sheep, and creates a natural insulation due to the air pockets that are naturally present throughout. And because it’s a natural fabric, it also naturally water-resistant, so it’s a great option for keeping warm and dry through the snowy weather. All-in-all, it’s one of the best options for both a casual or formal winter coat.

Tweed

We may be cheating a little bit, but tweed is a fabric that had to make it onto the list. Tweed is made out of wool or wool blend and usually comes in naturally-occurring colors. Tween is also very durable and can come in a variety of options in terms of how heavy it is. Lightweight tweed coats are a good option for more mild fall temperatures while heavyweight tweed coats can withstand even the most frigid of winters. The sky’s the limit for this versatile fabric!

Natural Fur and Faux Fur

Fur is soft, luxurious, and downright warm. Humans have been wearing fur for millions of years and it has never gone out of fashion for a reason. It is water-resistant and can withstand temperatures well below freezing. Now, fur coats coming in much more flattering silhouettes but there still as durable and warm as ever. They are even available in a faux fur option so you can have the same level of warmth and quality without having to use an animal’s coat and you can often pay less for it.

How to Care for Your Winter Coat

No matter what fabric you opt to get your winter coat in, it’s imperative to know how to take care of it so it can last for multiple seasons. Most of the time, higher quality materials can only be dry cleaned and it’s important to find a great dry cleaning company that can provide quality services to not just your coat, but all of your garments.

How to Care For and Clean Leather Boots

When you buy leather goods, and specifically leather boots, you commit to caring for them in the best way. Leather boot care can be slightly intensive, but if you take the time to do it, your boots will last forever. You can care for your leather boots in three steps: cleaning, condition, and polishing.

During the winter months, boots are a huge staple in many people’s wardrobe. They provide warmth and protection from harsh winter climates and add a stylish flair to any outfit. Your winter boots need to withstand the elements for multiple seasons to get as much value as possible out of them. One way to ensure that happens is to clean them regularly.

Here are a few easy ways to keep your leather boots clean so they will last for several winters.

Cleaning Boots

When cleaning your boots, the first and most important thing to do is to loosen and remove any surface debris. This debris, like dirt and salt, can be harmful to the leather, so if it’s buffed into the boot, you run the risk of ruining your shoe. Once the loose debris is removed, use a horsehair brush to buff the surface of your boot and remove any stubborn substances. It’s recommended that you repeat this step once every other week.mens leather boots

Next, take a damp rag and swirl it in a pot of a saddle soap until it starts to lather. Test the soap on a small part of the shoe to make sure that it won’t cause a permanent stain. Run the rag across the entire surface of the boot, paying attention to any areas that are stained or need extra scrubbing. Allow that to dry for at least 10 minutes. You don’t have to use saddle soap each time you go to clean your boots, only if you notice that your shoes need a little extra cleaning.

Conditioning Boots

Knowing how to condition leather boots is an essential step when you’re caring for them. Conditioners are useful for moisturizing the leather and keeping the fabric hydrated and soft. Once every 1-3 months, break out your conditioning kit.

When you’re ready to condition your boot, it’s a good idea to, again, test a small spot on the shoe to make sure that the conditioner won’t discolor the leather. Work the conditioner over the boot and add more conditioner as needed. Conditioning may temporarily darken the shoe, but as it dries, the original color will show through.

How to Polish Boots

Once a week, be sure to polish your leather boots to keep them moisturized and shiny throughout the winter. You can use either shoe cream to provide the boot with additional moisture and nourishment or a wax-based polish to give a more pronounced shine. Either way, it’s important to find a polish that matches the color of your boots as closely as possible.

Start with a small amount (a little goes a long way!) and add more polish as needed to produce maximum shine. Another benefit of polishing your leather boots is that the polish creates a barrier between the boot and debris, which keeps them looking fresh for longer. After the polish is dry, give the shoes a brush with the brush you used to shine your boots with to provide them with a final buffing to expose even more shine.

In addition to cleaning your boots when they are already dry, you need to know how to care for your boots when they are wet. You can use a water-resistant spray, but it’s not generally necessary. Depending on the type of leather you get, your boots will naturally be water-resistant, but it’s important to care for wet boots to avoid cracking and fading.

The good news is that it’s pretty simple to keep them looking pristine after they get drenched – let them air dry! Never set your wet boots directly in the sunlight or by a fire because it could dry your boots too quickly, causing them to crack.

Get Your Shoes or Boots Professionally Cleaned

Whether you’re an avid cleaner of your leather boots or you’ve slacked a little this season, it’s essential to get your boots professionally cleaned at least one time during and after the winter so you can have a fresh pair of gorgeous boots to wear and store. To get the best service and results on the market, put your trust in Mulberrys.

The Best Winter Fabrics for Cold Weather Clothing

We’ve told you about the best fabrics to wear in the summer, but what should you wear when the weather turns a little cooler? We love the winter months because it gives everyone an excuse to layer up with the warmest fabrics and keep things comfy. From cozy sweaters to toasty scarves, the sky’s the limit for the amount of clothing you can make out of these fabrics. Here are the best cold weather fabrics to bundle up with.

The 5 Best Cold Weather Fabrics

Cotton

Cotton is a universal fabric that can be made thin, in order to be breezy for summer, or thick so it can hold up to the elements of winter. It’s also a great alternative for people who have allergies to fabrics like wool. It’s fairly durable, but it is also a very breathable fabric and is very soft. One drawback of cotton is that it absorbs moisture, so it’s not an ideal fabric to wear on its own if there are harsh weather conditions in the forecast.

Leather and Faux Leather

Leather is a gorgeous fabric that is perfect for not only the winter months but all year round. Leather is a unique textile because it seems to get better with age. It forms to you, it’s very durable, and it’s a great shield against the elements. You need to maintain leather in a special way, but if you can manage it, you can keep it forever. For a more animal-friendly option, you can also opt for faux leather, which doesn’t use any animal products.

Wool

One gorgeous, and incredibly warm fabric, to consider when things start to cool down is wool. Raw wool is typically gotten from sheep, but more recently, manufactured options are hitting retail stores. Wool is a special fabric because it creates a natural insulation due to the air pockets that are present throughout. On top of that, it’s also water-resistant, so it’s a great option for snowy and rainy weather. Wool is lightweight, yet strong, which makes it fairly durable and long-lasting. All-in-all, it’s one of the best options for casual or formal cold-weather gear.

Fur and Faux Fur

Humans have been using fur to keep warm for millennia. Fur was relatively easy to procure in the olden days and was used to keep the elements out while also retaining plenty of warmth for the cold, snowy months. Now that we have central heating, fur is more of a statement piece than a necessity, but it still keeps us warm all the same. We even have a faux fur option so we can still be fashionable without the need for an animal to lose its coat. Both options are warm and durable, but you need to know how to maintain them so you can keep them looking like new for years.

Fleece

Last, but not least, is fleece. Fleece is pretty much synonymous with the winter time. Fleece is infinitely comfortable and relatively lightweight, so it’s a great fabric to use in casual, everyday coats and jackets so you can stay warm on the go. Along with it being lightweight, fleece is also an inexpensive fabric, so you can get a lot for very little money. It’s typically not water-resistant, so it’s best to keep it out of the rain and heavy snow if you opt not to put on a moisture-wicking layer on top.

No matter what warm-weather fabric you plan on wearing this year, rely on Mulberrys Garment Care to clean them to the highest standard. Visit Mulberrys Garment Care to experience high-quality dry cleaning for all of your warm-weather clothing. The Most Popular Halloween Costumes in the United States

The Most Popular Halloween Costumes Through the Years

As we get further into the month of October and temperatures (finally) begin to feel like fall, it can only mean one thing – Halloween is almost here! We are huge Halloween enthusiasts at Mulberrys Cleaners, spending weeks brainstorming the most clever costumes then carefully preparing the outfit we’ll wear on the big evening in the subsequent weeks. No matter how old you are, Halloween brings a certain indescribable magic and we’re so glad that it’s almost here.

While beginning our costume preparations this year, we got to thinking about what the most popular Halloween costumes have been in past years. Google is always one of the first places we turn to drum up costume ideas, so we decided to use Google Trends search data to dig into the most popular costumes across the country for the past 3 years, 2015-2017. We looked at the amount of searches for some of the most frequently popular costumes according to Google Frightgeist, along with those related to the most buzzworthy TV shows, movies, people, and current events of each year.

In addition, we looked at search data in September and early October of this year to help predict the costumes we’ll soon be likely to see trick or treating. And finally, last but certainly not least, since Disney Princess costumes are consistently popular, we looked which of the princess costumes is the most popular in each state.  Here’s what we found!

2015

Most popular Halloween costumes by state, 2015.

There was a quite a bit of variety in costumes year to year, and especially so in 2015. From classic costumes like clowns and cowboys to trendier movie-related costumes like Jurassic Park and Deadpool, 2015 was a mixed bag. What’s going on in the news and pop culture typically has a direct effect on what costumes Americans select each year, so it’s no surprise to see that the Walking Dead inspired costumes in the highest of states – the most searched in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

And now that we think about it, we do recall seeing one too many scary clowns while trick or treating in San Francisco – can we all agree that there are few things scarier?

2016

Most popular Halloween costumes by state, 2016.

2016 was an eventful year in news and politics since it was an election year. it’s not uncommon to see candidate costumes roaming around on Halloween, which helps explain why Hillary Clinton was the most searched costume in New York. And while Donald Trump didn’t make the map, his wife Melania was the most searched costume in Florida. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles originally debuted in the early 90s, but they’ve seen a resurgence in popularity over the past few years. As a result, they were one of the most overall popular costumes of 2016 – the most searched in Michigan, Minnesota, Virginia, and Washington.

2017

Most popular Halloween costumes by state, 2017.

Sometimes the simplest costumes end up being the most memorable. It’s interesting to see how consistently popular basic-seeming animal (both real and mythological) costumes are through the years. Mice, bears, sharks, dragons, and horses continued to see popularity in 2017. Compared to 2015 and 2016, 2017 seems to be the most impacted by popular TV shows and movies like Game of Thrones and Justice League.

2018

Most popular Halloween costumes by state, 2018.

Now that we’ve taken a look into past years, what can you expect to see while trick or treating this year? Based on the data, we can bet you’ll run into at least one Belle or Beast over the course of your Halloween evening. We’re pleased to see classic Halloween costumes like witches and vampires maintain their popularity.

2018 Disney Princesses

The most popular Disney Princess Halloween costumes in each state.

One trend that we noticed as we dug into the popular costumes of past years was the consistent presence of Disney-inspired costumes, but which ones will we be seeing this year? We looked at searches for all of the Disney Princess costumes and were surprised by the results. Despite the fact that Moana and Frozen are more recent Princesses, the classic gang continues to inspire costumes. Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Cinderella, and Snow White all make appearances on the map in at least one state.

Well, there you have it! Now that you’ve seen the trends in costumes for past years, what will you be dressing up as this year? Share with us in the comments!

5 Things You Didn’t Know Were Hiding in Your Bedding

Your bedding and linens may be fluffy and cozy, but there may be some not-so-nice things hiding in them that require an eco-friendly clean.

Last year, we learned that many of you don’t regularly change your bed sheets in our American Laundry Habits Survey. 17% of men and 7% of women say they never wash their guest sheets. When it came to washing bedding, around 7% of men said they only wash their sheets every six months and 10% of men said they couldn’t remember the last time they did it.

Your beds and linens are full of (bad) surprises that could be affecting your skin, allergies, and sleeping habits. This month, we’re offering 20% off cleaning of bedding and linens with code HOMESALE.

Why is getting your bedding and linens cleaned by a professional so important? There are five main reasons why you should refresh your bedroom in August before fall arrives.

Your bedding and linens can be full of dust mites.

1. Dust Mites: Dust mites are microscopic bugs that feed off of dust, dirt, and dead skin cells left behind in your bedding and linens. It’s estimated that 1/3 of your bedding and linens could be infested with these pesky little bugs! They can cause allergy flair ups! The right combination of eco-friendly detergents and care can ensure dust mites don’t take over your bedroom.

2. Animal and Human Hair: Hair isn’t always easy to spot. It can get deep inside your linens and bedding. Sometimes, even high-powered washers and vacuums can’t remove all the hair! A professional cleaner is able to remove all the hidden hairs you may not notice with your eyes.

Animal hair can linger in your bedding and linens.

3. Dead Skin: Believe it or not, your skin falls off in your sleep, even if it’s not flaky! On average, a person will shed about 1.5 pounds of dead skin a year. Dust mites love to feed on dead skin, so making sure your bedding and linens are washed regularly can help keep the dust mites away.

4. Bugs: Besides dust mites, other microscopic bugs can linger in your sheets. From bed bugs to fleas, your home can create an atmosphere for these little triggers to set up shop.

5. Sweat: Did you know the average human sweats 2 gallons of sweat a year? Now imagine most of that sweat being soaked up by your pillows, blankets, and sheets.

When was the last time you had your bedding and linens professionally cleaned? With our eco-friendly detergent and processes, not only will you refresh your bedding and linens but we’ll send them back to you toxin-free. Refresh your bedroom and wake up feeling refreshed this fall!

Update: Mulberrys is now Cashless

Mulberrys has decided to move towards a cashless business model to better serve your laundry and dry cleaning needs.

Dry cleaning & laundry reimagined. That was, and still is, our mission. What started as an idea to transform the laundry and dry cleaning industry has now turned into the new cultural “norm” for those who have tried our services.

Over the years, we’ve changed the way people think about their dry cleaning and laundry experience with free collar stays and button replacement, wood hangers, eco-friendly processes, toxin-free detergent, an on-demand app, same day services, and pickup & delivery. As we continue to expand our services in Dallas, Minneapolis, and San Francisco we’re taking another look at how we can continue to modernize the industry. With the popularity of our on-demand app and the way technology has impacted how customers pay, we’ve decided to go cashless.

Cashless?! What do you mean?! We’ve seen a decrease in cash transactions over the years. Many of our customers use some form of digital pay option to place their order with Mulberrys and after much research and many meetings, we concluded that a cashless business model is beneficial for you, the client, beyond just payment. It helps our store associates serve you faster, allows our pickup & delivery services to run without you having to be present, lines up with our mission to be eco-friendly and green, and makes for a more overall efficient customer service experience.

Our on-demand app offers cashless payment options.

Right now, we won’t be accepting Venmo or Paypal, but we will accept Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. We hope to add Venmo and PayPal as options in the near future. You can still use your debit or credit card like you normally would, too.

“We at Mulberrys are really excited about going cashless. This is just another step in our quest to reimagine the dry cleaning and laundry experience and make it smoother and easier for our customers.”

– Dan Miller, President of Mulberrys Garment Care

We continue to improve the laundry and dry cleaning experience for you and going cashless will allow us to provide you with the best service possible throughout the entire Mulberrys experience. We know not every business has moved towards a cashless model and many of you still carry cash. For those of you who prefer cash, we apologize in advance for any inconvenience that this may cause you.

We’re here to work through any issues along the way as you join us on this new cashless journey. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns (Minneapolis/St. Paul: wecare@mulberryscleaners.com, San Francisco: Mulberrys_SF@mulberryscleaners.com, Dallas: service@mulberryscleaners.com).

Thank you, as always, for choosing Mulberrys, We’re excited to show you how our new cashless model can improve your experience with us.

Negotiating a Salary or Asking for a Raise [Survey]

How People Really Feel About Negotiating a Salary or Asking for a Raise

At Mulberrys Garment Care, we know that there are many challenges to running a business. For both employees and employers, one of the hardest parts of being in the workforce is salary negotiation. We conducted a survey on common attitudes about salary negotiation, and break down the data below to help combat your salary negotiation fears.

Salary Basics

There are many factors that go into choosing a field to go into, especially considering the fact that your career can occupy over 40 hours a week, and could span several decades in length. One of the things that many take into consideration when choosing a profession is the pay. In fact, 30.3% of people surveyed said that the starting salary for positions in their chosen field was an important aspect when they were considering what profession to go into. This number varies when gender and generation are taken into account, with millenials expressing the highest amounts of deliberation about salary when deciding on a field.

Most people said starting salary in chosen field of employment was important.

A majority of respondents feel underpaid.

Despite starting salary being a major factor for many in the decision to enter into a profession, 52.8% of people report feeling underpaid. Members of Generation X reported feeling underpaid in the highest rates, at 61%, while Baby Boomers are the only generation to consider themselves adequately paid, at 53%.

A majority wouldn’t inflate their current salary on an application.

Even though the majority of respondents reported feeling that they were underpaid, most also said that they would not inflate their current salary on a job application. Only 35% of those surveyed would inflate their salaries, with Millenials responding that they would engage in the practice at the highest rate: 42%.

Making the Ask

While salaries are a huge factor for consideration when choosing a career and many feel as though they are underpaid, how do people approach salary negotiation when given a chance?

A majority of respondents were uncomfortable asking for a raise.

Gender doesn’t matter in asking for a raise for a majority of respondents.

It is a well-researched fact that women have a harder time negotiating salary than men, and our study was no exception. 21% of women feel “very uncomfortable” asking for a raise, while only 12% of men expressed the same discomfort. In fact, only Generation X indicated a higher level of ease when asking for a raise. Baby Boomers, by comparison, reported feeling “somewhat uncomfortable” and “very uncomfortable” at the highest rates, at 41% and 19% respectively.

How people prepare for a salary negotiation.

Everyone prepares to negotiate their salary differently, but there were some commonalities. Most preferred to compile their accomplishments to present as evidence for why they are deserving of a raise. However, 47% of respondents choose to focus on industry standards for salary, while 45% prep by rehearsing their pitch.

Salary expectations among survey respondents.

Beliefs and realities of salary negotiation

There are many expectations that people have when asking for a raise, and overall, there are many different beliefs about what salary negotiations should be. While 56.2% of people believe that most negotiate their salary before accepting a job, 48.7% don’t negotiate the offered salary before accepting a position. In fact, 28% of people have never asked for a raise at all, even though the majority of people surveyed expect a modest raise yearly.

Salary negotiation is one of the trickiest parts of any job. Hopefully, this guide will give you the confidence to know that you’re not alone in your uneasiness around asking for a raise. If you have any tips or helpful hints on asking for and securing a raise, leave them in the comments below!

How to Treat the 5 Most Common Fourth of July Stains

Fourth of July is a day for food, friends, and fun, but watch out for stains.  Your cookout menu may end up on your shirt.  Use these tips to conquer the five most common Fourth of July stains.

If on Thursday, the stains persist, bring them into a Mulberrys Cleaners store or schedule a pickup and delivery.  Our stain removal experts will use our eco-friendly cleaning solutions to remove those pesky stains.

1. Ketchup: Whether it’s on a cheeseburger or a hot dog, globs of ketchup can drip and leave an unflattering stain on your clothes.  Remove as much as the stain as you can and blot with a cloth.  Mix a small about of detergent and cold water together and blog until the stain begins to disappear.

2. Beer: While Beer is a light colored liquid, it can certainly do damage to your clothes. Apply a mixture of cold water and eco-friendly laundry detergent. Let sit for at least five minutes.  Repeat until the stain disappears (and grab another beer while you wait!).

3. Red Wine: Cheers! A glass of red wine make any holiday more fun, but a spill on your shirt can quickly ruin your favorite outfit. Blot lightly, do not rub, with a damp cloth and sprinkle some salt on the stain. Wash in the washing machine.

Avoid Memorial Day cookout stains

4. Colored Cake Frosting: What’s a Fourth of July party without a red, white, and blue cake?  Cake frosting includes food coloring, which can be difficult to get out of any piece of clothing. Scrape away as much as the stain as possible.  Blot with cold water and eco-friendly laundry detergent.  If possible, apply an instant stain remover.  Wash the clothing item in the washer and bring it to your dry cleaner if the stain sets!

5. Cheeseburger: No cookout is complete without a giant, juicy cheeseburger. A cheeseburger is a combination stain, so you have to treat each ingredient separately. Cheeseburgers can include both plant-based and animal-based stains. Blot the spot with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol to break down the oils. Flush out the rubbing alcohol and pour on some vinegar to break down the plant-based elements. Dab hydrogen peroxide on the stain to remove the animal-based elements.

Avoid stains at your cookout

The best way to ensure a stain doesn’t ruin your clothes is to bring it to a professional.  At Mulberrys, we treat your clothes with the best eco-friendly detergents and stain removal processes.

Enjoy your Fourth of July celebrations and don’t worry about the stains. We’ll take care of them!
