The (Ph)unny thing about Stains

Many of you may remember from your days of junior high chemistry a wonderful scientific concept known as the Ph scale. For those of you who have done your utmost to forget junior high chemistry, Ph is a scale used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a give substance. On one end of the Ph scale are things like lemon juice, which are highly acidic and on the other end are things ammonia that are highly alkaline. What does this have to do with dry cleaning and/or stains you might ask? Well, quit a lot.

It turns out that certain stains break down when presented with acidic or alkaline solutions. Not only that, but these stains can be easily categorized from where they originated. It is the knowledge of these stains and how they interact with different chemical solutions that enables your friendly neighborhood Mulberrys dry cleaner to remove even the toughest stains.

On one end of the spectrum are plant-based stains, which consist of any stain caused by a substance that contains plant products. Ketchup, wine, and coffee would all be examples of plant-based stains. Caught early enough, these stains can be removed with any acidic substance such as lemon juice.

On the other end of the spectrum are animal based stains like blood or sweat. These stains can be removed with an alkaline substance like ammonia. Most home detergents are slightly alkaline because stains like sweat and blood are the most common. At Mulberrys, we use a eco-friendly alkaline detergent with special enzymes that goes the extra mile to remove animal based stains that caused ring-around the collar and other issues.

Of course, knowing the type of stain and the Ph level needed to combat it is only the first step in the stain removal process.
